The overarching thing that comes to mind for me when thinking of Jim is his self-deprecating humor. After delivering an insightful, lucid opinion on anything from folk music to medieval printing technology to Christians in Iraq, it would alwasy be followed with "Though why anyone would be interested in my opinion is beyond me."
